Strategies for Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change in Masuria

22-04-2025

On April 3-4, 2025, experts from the Research and Innovation Centre Pro-Akademia presented the Action Plan and initial developments of the EcoReadyMasuria Living Lab at the Second Annual ECO-READY Consortium Meeting held at Cranfield University in the UK. The EcoReadyMasuria initiative, coordinated by Dr. https://Max Kochański and https://Łukasz Gontar, M.Sc. Eng., aims to develop climate change adaptation strategies for agriculture in the Masuria region, focusing on the resilience of essential products such as barley, maize, sunflower, red clover, and dairy products.

The RIC Pro-Akademia team highlighted how EcoReadyMasuria integrates field trials, environmental monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and policy recommendations to build more sustainable and climate-resilient food systems. Information was also shared about the ongoing establishment of Demonstration Farms, which were selected through an open call to test innovative solutions. These include fodder trees for milk production, fodder herbs combined with red clover, maize seed priming techniques, and intercropping of sunflower with maize. These initiatives aim not only at increasing yields and farm profitability but also at promoting biodiversity and long-term sustainability.

The EcoReadyMasuria Living Lab is part of the ECO-READY project (grant agreement number 101084201), funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program. By bringing together knowledge from farmers, policymakers, scientists, and industry, EcoReadyMasuria seeks to co-create climate change adaptation scenarios that can benefit regional and European agriculture. The next phase involves collecting data from field trials, advanced modeling to assess the impact of proposed practices, and policy-focused activities such as contingency planning and formulating recommendations for sustainable rural development.

RIC Pro-Akademia expresses gratitude to all consortium partners for their valuable feedback and support. Further information on the progress of EcoReadyMasuria, including collaboration and knowledge exchange opportunities, can be found on the project's official website: http://www.ecoreadymasuria.pl/
